Newly Updated for 2026!

As this was one of the first sections of our website to be constructed (around 2015) and given that 2026 is the 150th anniversary of the first publication of The Hunting of the Snark we felt it was time to have a bit of a refurbishement.

This has meant moving some features around. They are all still here, but might not be in exactly the same place as when you came here before. We have added some new ways to find information about editions of the book and have been adding new books, particularly recent publications and “derivatives”, i.e. works based on or inspired by the poem.

We are also, gradually, adding more images from the books, where we can do so without the “infringement of right”!

The Hunting of the Snark: the Text, Concordance, Editions and Illustrators

This facility provides a searchable version of the full text of The Hunting of the Snark accompanied by various analyses including a word concordance.

The site also includes information about Henry Holiday’s illustrations and comprehensive listings of editions and illustrators from 1876 to the present day.

Recommendations for Further Research

For more thorough descriptions and analyses of the editions and impressions published during Dodgson’s lifetime refer to Charles Lutwidge Dodgson: A Bibliography of Works Published in His Lifetime by Charlie Lovett, published by the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, 2024.

Some additional information about editions and reprints can be found in ‘The Listing of the Snark’ in Engaging the Snark by Selwyn Goodacre, published by Evertype, 2024.
