Introduction

These web pages provide resources for scholars of John Tenniel’s illustrations for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (AAIW) and Through the Looking-Glass (TTLG). All the images from the two books are reproduced in the section labelled The Illustrations with information such as measurements and location within the text. Where variant versions of the drawings exist, such as those from The Nursery “Alice” or the ‘Wonderland Postage-Stamp Case’ they are included for comparative purposes. Links are in place to catalogues of museum collections which contain proof copies of the illustrations and other relevant holdings. Where these relate to speciific images, they are on the relevant illustration pages.

Titles

Of particular importance are the titles and 'id' codes (eg 'AAIW103') assigned to the illustrations for AAIW and TTLG which are from the definitive ‘Lastoria List’. This nomenclature was defined by Amanda Lastoria between 2014 and 2016 and has been adopted by this website in order to standardise references to the illustrations. They have been adopted and are promoted by the Lewis Carroll Society and their use is recommended in all scholarly work. Further details of the Lastoria List (for AAIW) can be found in The Carrollian, issue 26 (published February 2015). See Lastoria, Amanda, ‘Lastoria List of Titles for Tenniel’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Illustrations’, The Carrollian, Issue 26. The Lastoria list for Through the Looking-Glass, with introductory remarks, was published in The Carrollian Issue 29, August 2017.
